Campus posting policies under review

Student organizations rely on posting and free advertisement to get the word out about their activities. The university has formulated specific posting policies to ensure fairness and effectiveness, but due to recent posting problems, the policies will have to change. Organizations have begun to post over others' fliers and use industrial strength spray chalk, which lasts for several months instead of several weeks. This then prevents others from chalking, due to a lack of room.

Leaders of different student organizations and USG representatives brought the problem to USG's attention because when they would post for different events, they wouldn't get enough attention if they followed the rules, because so many people were breaking them. This problem called for a committee that came together in order to revise the posting policy and resolve this issue. There are several goals at hand as Adam Rupe, president of USG, explains: "We want to make sure that our sidewalks are not constantly covered in spray chalk. It is not that we care if it looks tacky, but it is that it takes up space for others people to advertise – that is my personal problem with it. I think spray chalk and flyers are some of the best ways to inform students, but they must be used in the proper manner."

The committee that discussed this issue last week was made up of members of Student Relations, Public Life, and Finance, and now the Office of Student Affairs is becoming involved as well. No resolution was reached, but Rupe says that the final recommendations from USG will come in the weeks right after fall break.

"We want to not rush into this since it is such an important policy," Rupe said.
