Veale weight room upgraded

The Athletic Department announced the completion of a $50,000 renovation of the weight room in the Veale Center earlier this summer.

First-year head track and field coach Steve Rubin was appointed by athletic director Dave Diles to lead a committee of coaches and staff in the process, which began with the hashing out of ideas last fall.

"We sought and received feedback from all the coaches and our sports medicine staff on what they needed and wanted," Rubin said. "We wanted it to look good aesthetically, but also wanted it to be extremely functional. I think we accomplished that."

The project integrated the upgrading and replacement of current equipment with the addition of numerous combination racks including platforms, multiple types of benches, new bars, new bumper and standard plates and two full sets of dumb bells [from five to 50 pounds and 55-100 pounds].

The group also wanted a room that would be especially efficient for the varsity athletes and that was the influence behind the new look of the old rifle range where the addition of medicine balls, bosu balls, and stability balls allows a new trend of sports training to occur.

"It's good for the department and school because it makes a much better impression than it did before," Rubin said. "It is now an extremely functional space. Basically anything you could do before, you can still do, plus a whole lot more, and with nicer and more functional equipment."
