Comedians of IMPROVment start off the year right
IMPROVment, the Case Western Reserve University improvised comedy group, has kicked off this year with two consecutive knockout shows. The first two performances at the Black Box in Eldred Theater received roaring applause and thunderous laughter.
When interviewed, the group response was universally one of ecstatic joy at the huge turnout they saw at their shows. Trevor Piecuch, a freshman who attended the group's second show, said about his experience, "It was awesome! I loved that I got to participate in one of their games too."
The comedy troupe, consisting of nine members in all (two of whom are currently abroad), is more than just a performance group, however. They are truly an intertwined family. Improv comedy performances hinge on knowing one's scene partner and playing off them. As such, the group members are truly close friends who can be said to literally know the inner workings of one another's minds.
It isn't all simply fun and games though. The bonds of the troupe are tested when they find themselves dealing with adverse circumstances like the graduation of integral members or a poor show. Times like those, according to senior Chris Kervick, are what truly bring forward your confidence and pride in your fellow improvisers.
The troupe always maintains the mentality of coming back stronger after every show and supporting each other every time, as is evidenced by their motto Always Got Your Back.
The troupe's excitement about the near future was almost palpable. Their next show is Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Black Box in Eldred Theater. The next big step for the season afterwards is auditions on Sept. 16 and 17 where indivduals hoping to become members can go to have their improvising talents tested.
The troupe considers the auditions to be a "no fear" approach to comedy and are simply looking for individuals with a positive attitude and genuine enthusiasm.
CWRU is fortunate to have a very unique improv troupe in that they do not just do standard performances. They perform at charity events, campus events, as well as formal improv competitions across the state. They feel themselves to be an integral part of the university community, and they always conduct their performances with that in mind.
The troupe's growth and success depend upon audience feedback, so go out and see their shows! You won't regret it.
