Spartan Spotlight: Julie Schaefer

Julie Schaefer is a senior nutrition major from Independence, Ohio. This is her fourth year playing volleyball as a Spartan.

Greg Meyer: So after three years playing for the Spartans, what is your best volleyball memory?

Julie Schaefer: I can't decide if it's the day we all decided to call Maggie "Marge" or the day our coaches picked it up and started calling her "Marge."

GM: Huh. So her real name is a Simpsons character and her nickname is a Simpsons character? Only at Case. Who inspired you to play volleyball?

JS: I played CYO sports and we had the same girls and the same coach for volleyball, basketball, and softball, so I blame my sixth grade teammates for getting me into this.

GM: Yeah, middle school girls can be vicious. Who is your favorite athlete?

JS: Misty May. Although I do not envy those uniforms they wear for beach volleyball. Did you see those things? There actually was a rule that their bottoms couldn't be more than two inches thick on the sides!

GM: First of all it is Misty May-Treanor. C'mon, your favorite athlete and you do not even know her name? More importantly, I did notice the uniforms, and they were awesome. What is your favorite quote?

JS: "Enjoy it while it lasts, because after college it's called alcoholism."

GM: Thank God for grad school. Would you rather have the strength of 1000 women, be able to fly, or be invisible?

JS: I would love to be able to fly. Are there any laws against flying under the influence? We would never need a DD or pay for a cab again.

GM: I am positive the FAA would have some problems with that, but what are they going to do? Pull you over? If you could invite any three people to dinner, living or dead, who would it be and why?

JS: Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Mary-Kate Olsen. Plenty of food for me and plenty of leftovers for later.

GM: Hey, they have serious diseases. You have no idea how difficult it is to be insanely rich and do nothing all day. What's your least favorite thing about volleyball?

JS: When you get a wedgie and you know everyone can tell and you can't pick it in front of the crowd.

GM: Hey, if it is out in the open like that, I say pick away. I feel your pain, football pants are really tight and sometimes you just have to readjust. If you could participate in any other sport, which would you pick and why?

JS: Football. So I could listen in on the locker room talk. I swear they gossip twice as much as girls with half the drama.

GM: There are no secrets in there- that is for sure. I will leave it at that. Who is the best athlete you've ever competed with and why?

JS: Colleen Martin. She's so intense. I've never seen anyone else throw a ball cart because she missed a serve.

GM: You should see her Jell-O wrestle. It was one of the top three scariest things I have ever seen. Finish this sentence: Volleyball is like a guy…

JS: Because you take anything and everything that comes your way.

GM: Everyone makes mistakes. This is where that locker room talk becomes interesting. What makes volleyball stand out from other sports?

JS: The annoying, girly squeals and cheers after every play.

GM: You should come to the field on Tuesday night, I think the women's soccer team would give you a run for your money. Any insight on how the season is going so far?

JS: Our first tournament we came in second. Our second tournament we came in first. We hope to take first this weekend at home, so come and watch us. We haven't had this great a start since I've been here.

GM: Sounds great. Good luck with the rest of the season.
