Baseball, tennis athletes honored by UAA

Track and field finishes in top five at meet

The Case Western Reserve University track and field team competed in the Otterbein April Fool’s Invite in Westerville, Ohio on Friday, March 30. The men’s team finished second with a score of 96 points, while the women’s team finished fourth with a score of 81 points. The men had eight top-five finishes, with fourth-year runner Andrew Ibibo leading the way by winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.63 seconds. His relay team, which included himself, second-year runners Jonathan Haling and Michael Hradesky and first-year runner Thomas Patton, also finished first. Fourth-year runner Aidan DeSanto also finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a new meet record time of 4:03.41. The women had seven top-five finishers, with fourth-year runner Danielle Kulpins finishing first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, setting a meet record for the event, and third-year runner Jennifer Hoffmann finishing first in the 1,500-meter run. These two athletes led the way for the rest of the team’s top-five finishes. Kulpins was also recognized as the Spartan Club Athlete of the Week. Along with the track athletes, the throwers were in action this weekend at Carnegie Mellon University at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet in Pittsburgh.      

 

UAA Athletes of the Week

After a hot start to the season, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team has been climbing in the NCAA Division III ranks, coming in at No. 13. Along with the team accolades, individual athletes have also been recognized for their events. Third-year second baseman Rocco Maue and first-year pitcher Matt Levine were named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Baseball Athletes of the Week. Levine was also named the Spartan Club Athlete of the Week. Men’s tennis was also recognized on the UAA level for its continuing impressive season. Second-year player Sam Concannon was also named the UAA Athlete of the Week. Concannon and the team have been ranked No. 20 in the NCAA.

 

“Celebration of Italian American Baseball”

The Case Western Reserve University Department of Modern Languages in Italian, in conjunction with the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, CWRU Film Society and CWRU Spartan Baseball, held a “Celebration of Italian American Baseball” on Wednesday, March 28. The event featured the showing of the movie “Italian American Baseball Family” by filmmaker, author and director Roberto Angotti. Following the movie, there was a question and answer discussion with panelists Scott Longert, Joseph Wancho and John McMurray on the Italian American Cleveland Indians.
