Bell and Watson named UAA Athletes of the Week

Case Western Reserve University football produced a pair of University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week following its season finale victory versus Carnegie Mellon University. Senior wide receiver Vinny Bell has been selected as UAA Offensive Player of the Week, while senior defensive end Adam Watson was tabbed as the league’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

The Spartans (6-4, 2-1 UAA) wrapped up the 2012 campaign with a 36-24 triumph over the rival Tartans in the 27th Annual Academic Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 10. Case finished second in the UAA standings.

Bell, who starred as a two-time All-American for the CWRU men’s soccer team from 2008-11, turned in a breakout game with seven catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. The seven receptions and 180 yards were each career highs, and Bell also carried the ball once for 19 yards. Four of his receptions covered 37, 37, 32 and 28 yards, respectively.

Watson capped off an outstanding senior season and career with six tackles, five quarterback hurries, a sack, and a forced fumble. The senior end also blocked a field goal attempt, giving him a team-high five total blocks this season. Watson finished the year with 59 tackles, including a team-high 10 for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

During the past six seasons, Case football has produced an overall record of 54-10 with four UAA Championships (2007-09, ’11) and three NCAA playoff berths (2007-09). The Spartans finished second this season in the UAA behind Washington University, to whom they lost last week, 10-7.
