Relay For Life, one of Case Western Reserve University’s biggest traditions, will host its kickoff event this Friday, Sept. 28 from noon to 2 pm at the Kelvin Smith Library Oval.

Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life is an overnight fundraising walk during which teams camp out and members take turns walking all through the night. During the event, there will be lots of food, music, and games to help keep the spirit of giving alive. Last year, for example, there was a community barbeque, fencing, kung fu demonstrations, zumba, and much more.

During this Friday’s kickoff, students can learn more about CWRU’s Relay For Life and find out more ways to become involved.

“One new thing we are doing this year is asking the campus community to recommend people who might be good honorary chairs for Relay For Life.” said Angela Lowery, student service coordinator for the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning. “These could be cancer survivors, caregivers, or other people who have experienced the effects of cancer and who embody the spirit of Relay For Life.”

During the kick-off, there will be live music, food, and games.

Last year, CWRU was able to raise over $70,000 for the American Cancer Society, and this year’s record-size freshman class will only help the school surpass that mark in 2013.

“I’m really excited for Relay for Life. It will be my first time participating, so I hope we will be able to raise more money than last year,” said CWRU freshman Tyler Clary.

Relay For Life 2013 will take place from Saturday, April 20 to Sunday, April 21.
