PechaKucha Night

PechaKucha, which is Japanese for “the sound of conversation,” is probably one of the strangest and most innovative events to take place in Cleveland. It features a succession of 14 designers, each explaining their work, ideas, and obsessions around art, fashion, food, life, architecture, film, furniture, music, community, and photography in a six-minute presentation (20 slides at 20 seconds each). This is their 14th event and is highly popular.

Jolly Prom Night

Whether or not you got to live it up at your high school prom, the Jolly Scholar is giving you another, sillier, chance to enjoy everything that prom and the upcoming season of love is truly about: drinking and taking crazy party photos. It’s about to get romantic; they encourage you to try it before you buy it this holiday. Discounts for drinks based on fancy wardrobes.

Bazaar Bizarre Valentine’s Day Show

The hands-down hippest craft fair is back this month to celebrate Valentine’s Day, a holiday possibly more commercial even than Christmas. These trendy crafters make gifts that everyone will want, without the consumer prices and greed attached to them. This is the only one-stop-shop to buy gifts for your hipster honey.

Location: 78th Street Studios, 1301 W. 78th St.

Time: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Nerd Works

Local artist and owner of the now-defunct Asterisk Gallery, Dana Depew, will debut his new solo show this weekend. “Nerd Works” was inspired by the movie “Revenge of the Nerds,” a life-changing film for Depew. Video installations, reclaimed signage, and movie stills make up the exhibition of all-new work by the artist.

CSSA Chinese Lantern Festival

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association present this illuminated banquet featuring authentic Chinese food and performances. Tickets will be on sale Feb. 10 in Nord from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at the event.

Time: 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Price: $15 in advance/$20 day of

New Music Series

Composer David Del Tredici, one of the fathers of the Neo-Romantic movement in music, is a Pulitzer Prize-winner and turns 75 next month. The composer will host a symposium discussing his music and approach to composition with students and the general public.

Fall Book Launch in February

The Case Reserve Review will be celebrating the writers and artists who submitted and contributed to their fall 2011 publication. Spoken word poets from the Cleveland community will be present to start the reading and spoken word circle. Eat dinner: they’ll be serving up Aladdin’s, Tommy’s, and Tree Country Bistro. Best of all, there will be free books for everyone.
