UAA Athletes of the week

Another red-hot seven days at the plate has landed Case Western Reserve University freshman rightfielder Gena Roberts University Athletic Association Hitter of the Week honors, announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Roberts, who earns the UAA honor for the first time in her young career, batted a whopping .581 (18-for-31) during a 5-3 week for the Spartans. In eight games, Roberts homered, walked twice, and totaled 5 doubles, 10 runs, and 10 RBIs.

During this past Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Bethany College, Roberts was a combined seven-for-eight with her third homer of the season and seven RBIs. In 14 games since returning from the team’s spring break trip to Florida, Roberts has batted .574 with three homers and 15 RBIs as the Spartans have won 11 of 14.

For the season, the rookie outfielder is batting a team best .415 and ranks second on the squad with 34 base hits.

The Spartans (17-10 overall) are only two wins shy of equaling the team’s total from all of last season. Next up on the schedule is a home doubleheader with Heidelberg University on Wednesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m. at Mather Park.

After sprinting to the finish line with one of the nation’s fastest times in the 110m hurdles, Case Western Reserve University senior All-American Matthew Jurcak picked up his second straight University Athletic Association Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week laurel.

The second consecutive weekly award marks the fourth time in Jurcak’s career he has earned the honor. He has continued to post outstanding performances since his fifth-place All-American finish in the 60m hurdles at the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship in early March.

During last weekend’s Emory Track & Field Classic, Jurcak bested the field with a time of 14.61 seconds, the fourth fastest in Division III this spring.

Two weeks ago while competing in the VMI/Washington & Lee Carnival, Jurcak earned his initial UAA award this spring after setting a stadium record with a first-place time of 14.94 in the 110m hurdles.

Jurack and the Spartans are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 7 on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University for the annual Marv Frye Invitational at George Gauthier Track. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Delaware.

A 2-0 record and 16 scoreless innings have netted Case Western Reserve University junior left-hander Jarrett Gish University Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week honors, announced the league office on Tuesday.

Gish (4-1 overall) threw a pair of eight-inning scoreless gems last week to defeat Otterbein University on Tuesday and Allegheny College on Sunday. In 16 innings, the southpaw allowed just 10 hits and struck out 13 batters without issuing a walk. Versus Otterbein, Gish struck out a career-high nine batters as the Spartans cruised to a 5-0 victory.

In his last four outings dating back to March 15, Gish has not surrendered a run in 24.2 consecutive innings. During that stretch, he has lowered his season earned run average from 5.93 to 2.56.

The team leader in ERA, Gish has 34 strikeouts and only five walks in 38.2 innings of work this spring.

The Spartans (16-10 overall) have won four of six heading into a single, nine-inning game versus Denison University this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Nobby’s Ballpark.
