The Spartan baseball team had high goals heading into the season. The Spartans were looking to return to the NCAA tournament and compete for a national championship. Despite their strong stats on paper, the Spartans sputtered and stalled at points this season as they finish the season at 24 and 15, a far cry from their 34 and 12 from just a season ago.
The Spartans were left off the most recent regional rankings, a strong sign that they will not be continuing on to playoff baseball. Despite this the Spartans still stand well above .500 on the season and can hold their heads high.
To finish the season the Spartans rode a roller coaster of momentum to a four and four finish in their final eight games. The Case Western Reserve University team won three of their four games in the round robin with DePauw University and University Athletic Assoication rival Washington University. The Spartans beat hosting DePauw in both matchups 11-3 in the first match up and 5-4 in the second. The team split with Washington dropping their first game 3-1 but battling back for a narrow 6-5 win in the second. The Spartans then used their first reading day to take on perennial powerhouse Marietta College, the team that knocked the Spartans out of the playoffs last year. CWRU was unable to respond and dropped both 5-3 and 3-0.
The squad wrapped their season on Tuesday when they split their final double head of the year with crosstown rival John Carroll University. The Spartans lost the opening game by a final score of 4-2 while winning the final game of the season by the narrow margin of 7-6.
