Following Luminai’s announcement of their partnership with Cleveland Clinic in April, Cleveland Clinic finally released an official announcement on Sept. 9 announcing the deployment of Luminai to be used in their hospital system.

Luminai is an artificial intelligence startup based in San Francisco founded in 2020 by Kesava Kirupa Dinakaran. The company is specifically focused on healthcare optimization.

“When I first started working in healthcare, I expected those costs to be spread across hundreds of operational work streams. They’re not. They’re concentrated in roughly a dozen—a handful of massive work streams eating almost everything,” Dinakaran writes in his founder letter. He believes that AI, namely Luminai, will be the answer to fixing healthcare processes and lowering operational costs.

At Cleveland Clinic, the goal is to turn manual administrative labor into a process automated with AI. Its first course of action is to use Luminai’s AI system to identify, understand and transcribe external referrals into the electronic medical record (EMR). As a result, patients can be connected with the care they need more efficiently.

Dinakaran also aligns its AI with existing hospital or clinic systems by integrating their infrastructure and standard operating procedures into the AI system. Since healthcare is unique from person to person, Luminai still relies on human intervention when ambiguity arises. However, the difference is that Luminai routes the full context of the encountered issue to the proper team that is able to resolve the problem. The solutions as a result of human intervention are then looped back into the AI system, continuously developing the intelligence even after implementation.

With rising costs and stakes to modernize health systems, “Our collaboration with Luminai allows us to apply AI in ways that meaningfully support our teams by reducing administrative burden and improving patient satisfaction,” said Cleveland Clinic chief digital officer Rohit Chandra.

However, this isn’t Cleveland Clinic’s first implementation or collaboration with an AI startup. Previously, they partnered with Ambience Healthcare in Feb. 2025 and Dyania Health in Aug. 2025 are a couple of examples. Ambience Healthcare is an AI documentation software used to document patient visits and generate summaries for patients and caregivers. Dyania Health leans on the research side, focusing on recruiting participants for clinical trials.

Cleveland Clinic’s new partnerships demonstrate their interest in advancing and growing alongside AI.
