Our campus offers a diverse array of shows through various theater groups. With so many options, there is no reason not to attend one.
One of the theater groups on campus is the Players’ Theatre Group, a group that puts on shows proposed by the students. At the moment, they are accepting submissions until Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. and will announce the show after Labor Day weekend. Although the show has yet to be announced, auditions will be on Sept. 14-15 in Eldred Theater and the performances are on Oct. 29-31. The second production will be on Dec. 3-5. If you have any questions about the proposal process, contact Jonah Roth at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Case Footlighters is an entirely student-run musical theater group that puts on one production each semester. Students do everything from the acting and singing on stage to playing instruments in the pit orchestra to tech work. This semester the show is “First Date: The Musical.” The show follows a blind date in real time, as the two main characters meet each other and confront their own emotional baggage. The show has a small cast, but other restaurant patrons perform multiple roles as people from the couple’s personal lives and pasts.
Auditions for this production will be on Sept. 4 (5:30-9:30 p.m.), Sept. 5 (3:30-6:30 p.m.) and callbacks on Sept. 6 (4-8 p.m.) in Denison Rehearsal Hall (the same building as Wade Commons). The performances are on Oct. 22 (8:30 p.m.), Oct. 23 (8 p.m.) and Oct. 24 (8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.) in Carlton Commons.
For those of you not interested in musical comedy, Eldred Theater will be putting on two contrasting productions this semester. Jerrold Scott, the director for the musical, places emphasis on “the variety of plays Eldred offers.”
According to Scott, “[this] is designed to give the students and audience lots of exposure.”
Eldred Theater has productions ranging from Shakespeare to family drama and musicals.
The first production is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Shakespeare, directed by Jayce Tromsness, a guest director. This classic takes place in a bewitched forest, in which fairies control the love lives of humans who have ended up there for the night. The show will run Oct. 2-3 at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 4 at 3 p.m., Oct. 9-10 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 3 p.m.
After Shakespeare, the Eldred Theater will shift to a musical, “The Addams Family” by Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, directed by Jerrold Scott with musical direction by Brad Wyner. The show portrays the notoriously gloomy family in the midst of a crisis: Wednesday Addams has fallen in love with a shockingly ordinary boy. This production will run Nov. 13-14 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 15 at 3 p.m., Nov. 20-21 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.
With all these great productions on the way to campus this fall, there is no need to go to Playhouse Square to catch a show. So if you find yourself bored on a Friday night, consider supporting our theater programs.
