The Student Leadership Journey Council (SLJC) is excited to recognize IMPROVment as student organization of the month.
IMPROVment was founded in 2003 to “bring free and hilarious improv comedy to the Case Western community.” IMPROVment’s mission is to bring laughter to the students, faculty, and community.
Q: What outreach activities/programs does IMPROVment hold for CWRU and the community?
A: All of IMPROVment’s events are free to the public, and we bring in comedic artists from all over the country to provide diverse comedy to the campus. Each spring we hold our annual Lake Effect ImprovFest, in which we bring both professional and college troupes from around Midwest for a full night of improv comedy. As this fall was our tenth anniversary, we also brought in 30 alumni of the troupe who came back to perform in our 10th Anniversary Show. They came from all over, and are now a diverse group of professionals-doctors, actors, lawyers, directors, etc. IMPROVment also loves to appear at events around campus. Most recently we appeared at the Rainbow Babies Benefit and CWRU Live!.
Q: How does IMPROVment promote leadership development and fellowship internally to all of its members?
A: We like to think the troupe as a big, supportive family-strong friendships are key to having the amount of trust we need to be on stage together every week. We support each other academically and socially and spend a lot of time just having fun together. As such, the older, more experienced members act as mentors for the younger members, passing on improv skills and encouraging the younger members to have an active voice within the group. Each week, one or two members, whether younger or older, volunteer to lead practices for that week, as well act as MCs for that week’s show.
Q: How many students are involved in IMPROVment? What types of majors do they have?
A: There is no set number of IMPROVment members in any given season. Right now we have 14 active members. The troupe features players with a broad range of majors, including Biomedical Engineering, Theater, Nursing, Computer Science, Business, English, Anthropology, and the list goes on.
