The Case Western Reserve University cross country teams hosted the 10th annual Bill Sudeck Classic on Saturday, September 4 at Squire Valleevue Farm. The Spartan women placed first of six teams and the men were second of six.
Case’s women totaled 34 points on the 4k course and were followed by Baldwin-Wallace College -61, Allegheny College (PA) – 69, John Carroll University – 77, Ursuline College – 151 and Notre Dame College (OH) – 158.
The Spartans placed four runners in the top 10 including individual champion junior Natalia Cabrera ran in a time of 14:42.55. Senior All-American Justine Jeroski was third in 14:50.50, senior Andrea Fischione was eighth in 15:27.00, and senior Cindy Spahn was ninth in 15:33.50.
Also placing in the top 20 was freshman Brooke Simpson in 13th – 15:48.26, senior Bettina Kaphingst in 14th – 15:57.39, sophomore Corin Bowen in 17th – 16:10.89, and freshman Allison Magee in 20th – 16:16.43.
The Spartan men totaled 44 points on the 6k course to finish second to No. 3 nationally-ranked Allegheny (19 points). Baldwin-Wallace was third with 83 points and was followed by John Carroll – 107, Notre Dame – 159 and Adrian College – 169.
Sophomore Phillip Yeung – pictured- led the Spartans in fifth place with a time of 19:37.90. Sophomore Chris Kelly and senior David Carter were ninth and 10th, respectively, with times of 19:49.69 and 19:51.02.
Also in the top 20 was senior Robert Ontko in 14th at 19:59.86, junior Ethan Teare in 15th at 20:01.63, senior Tim Smith in 16th at 20:01.99, senior Austin Schmidt in 19th at 20:06.14 and senior Brian Link in 20th at 20:09.13.
The Sudeck Classic is named in honor of legendary former coach, Bill Sudeck, who passed away in August of 2000.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Penn State Behrend University Invitational at 11:00 a.m. in Erie, Pennsylvania.
