Over the past few years, Starbucks has released more specialty limited-edition drinks. At the beginning of the year, the Unicorn Frappucino was added to the menu and began a craze amongst students and other community members. In order to help celebrate Halloween this year, Starbucks introduced the Zombie Frappucino, which was only available from Oct. 26-31.
According to the Starbucks website, the green color within the drink is made from caramel green apple powder; the pink part is made from pink powder and the “brain” of the zombie is made from dense pink cream.
Some CWRU students tried the Zombie Frappucino in the past week, and some indicated that it is tasty and enjoyable while others felt that these drinks only exist to let people post pictures on social media.
Fourth-year student Jessica Zhou didn’t like the drink.
“This product is too sweet for me and I think the green apple powder tastes weird with the mixture of the pink cream,” she said.
However, she appreciated its appearance, saying that it fit well with the Halloween theme.
Zhou said she was still willing to try out other Starbucks limited-edition products in the future, but she doubted she’d enjoy all of them.
On the other hand, Shelly Wang, a doctoral student in the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering, really enjoyed the colorful drink.
“I really like [the] Zombie Frappucino. It both looks and tastes better than the Unicorn Frappuccino from last year,” she said.
Though some suggested that the frappucino was excessively sweet, Wang did not consider that an issue big enough to prevent it from being tasty overall.
“[It] tastes like … ice-cream that I used to have when I was little, and I do not consider that as overly sweet,” he said.
Some students chose to purchase this drink because of the “Insta-worthy” look and recommendations from their peers. According to second-year student Hannah Zhang, she did not make up her mind to try this until several of her friends post pictures of the Zombie Frappucino on social media and recommended that she try it out.
“The first taste of it is tolerable,” she said, “but after the second taste I chose to finish it by taking a photo.”
The feedback comments from the Zombie Frappucino are polarized. Some people on campus recommended it as the one of the better Starbucks drink, while others considered it drink suitable to merely take selfies with. Regardless of either type of comment, the Zombie Frappucino is gone now; it was a fun and festive drink while it lasted.
“I wish Starbucks would initiate more tasty and pretty drinks in the future,” said Wang, “and I will definitely try those ones out.”
