Track and Field place in top at Sparky Adams Invitational
The Case Western Reserve University track and field teams competed in the Sparky Adams Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. The women’s team finished third with a score of 104.5 points, while the men’s team finished sixth with 63 points. The Spartan women were paced by fourth-year thrower Nimi Gupta and fourth-year jumper Rachel Willard. Gupta finished first in the weight throw, while Willard finished first also in the triple jump. Many of the women placed in the top five of their respective event category. The Spartan men were paced by first-year jumpers Kai Fletcher and Jordan Butler. Fletcher finished second in the triple jump, while Butler finished second in the high jump. The men also had stellar performances from hurdlers, runners and pole vaulters.
The team will now prepare for the upcoming 2018 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29.
Women’s tennis seeded No. 5 in UAA Championships
The No. 16 CWRU women’s tennis team compete in the UAA Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida from Friday, April 27 to Sunday, April 29. The team, seeded at No. 5 in the tournament, will face the No. 4 seed and No. 12 nationally-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. The winner of the match will move on the play either the top-seed and nationally top-ranked Emory University or the No. 8 seed University of Rochester. This year’s tournament is especially deep, with seven of the eight teams ranked in the top 25 of Division III.
UAA and Spartan Club Honors
Various CWRU softball and baseball athletes were recognized by the UAA for their athletic performances this last week. Softball’s second-year pitcher Ilissa Hamilton and fourth-year second baseman Maren Waldner received UAA Athlete of the Week honors. Hamilton was recognized for her stellar pitching against Washington University in St Louis, while Waldner was recognized for her batting skills. Waldner was also honored with the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week, along with baseball’s second-year pitcher Casey McConihe. McConihe threw five shutout innings with five strikeouts, leading the Spartans to clich at least a share of the 2018 UAA Baseball Championship.
