On the Beat

The Case Western Reserve University Police Department would like to welcome back all students, staff, and faculty as they return for the new semester. Hopefully, everyone had a good break and is returning to campus well-fed with clean laundry and a refreshed attitude – or at least clean laundry.

As we all get back into the routines of the academic year and try and keep a few of our New Year’s resolutions past Groundhog Day, let us get back into our campus safety routines as well. The police department would like to provide the following tips and reminders about things we have previously mentioned, but may have been erased from your memory by too much eggnog or holiday cheer.

While astronomy tells us the days are getting longer, it still gets pretty dark pretty early this time of year. Darkness, regardless of the hour of the day, is typically when most of our robbery incidents occur. When moving around campus during these hours, try to stick to well-lit and well-travelled areas, such as major roads or streets. Also use transport services, such as the shuttle buses and Safe Ride (safreride.case.edu or 368-3000) as often as you need to, especially during late hours. Another option is to walk with friends or a group – statistically most of our robberies occur to victims who are travelling by themselves.

If you think you see someone else in trouble, or are in a situation where you are feeling nervous or threatened, call CWRU PD right away at 216-368-3333. Pay attention to your surroundings when walking around campus; don’t bury yourself too deeply in electronic devices.

We have had a couple of recent burglary incidents on campus. Remember to lock doors and windows to your residence when you are leaving, secure valuables, and report suspicious activity around residential buildings. Let’s look out for one another and have a great spring semester 2013.

CWRU Police Blotter Jan. 1, 2013 to Jan. 15, 2013

Jan. 13 – Theft from auto, sound system removed, Carlton Road.

Jan 13. – Burglary, items taken from apartment between Dec. 14 and Jan. 13, E.116 Street.

Jan. 13 – Robbery, two individuals robbed by pair of suspects brandishing a weapon. Two juvenile suspects were arrested by the CWRU Police Department officers, immediately after incidents were reported. Weapon determined to be a BB gun, E.115 Street and Euclid Av/Coltman Rd intersection
