The Case Western Reserve University community is known for thinking beyond the possible. Each week, this column aims to capture a slice of campus life.

Q: How do you like track so far?
A: I love track, this is my third year running. I run the 400 and the relay. We have conference this weekend, so we’re getting ready to leave for Atlanta this weekend. We get to fly—we don’t have to drive, luckily.

Q: What’s your favorite part about track?
A: Competing. People always ask me why I run, like, “Running’s awful, why would you do that?” We always have a dual meet with Carnegie Mellon University, and we beat them for the first time since I’ve been here. It’s always a big hype meet, so it was awesome. I also have a lot of friends on the track team, so that’s a good part of it. One of the biggest parts of being on a team is the friendship and camaraderie. I wouldn’t have any friends if I didn’t play sports. I would just be in my room all the time.

Q: How do you balance sports with school?
A: It’s tough, but you just got to look at it like another class with homework assignments. You’re committing an hour-and-a-half, two hours to it, so it’s like taking another three or four credits. Then you casually miss a day of class. It is what it is, but it’s worth it.

Q: What made you decide to run track in college?
A: Well, I wasn’t going to. I ran track in high school and didn’t know whether I was going to do it or not, and then my roommate freshman year convinced me to do it. I realized how much I would’ve missed it if I hadn’t done it. It was a great decision—don’t regret it at all.
