Match # 3

The Case Western Reserve University Spartans lost their third round match against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. With a final tally of three sets to one, the team fought hard against every point and came just short in each set. The Spartans lost the first two sets with scores of 23-25 and 24-26, respectively, despite outstanding defensive play and some critical kills by all the ladies guarding the net.

The team refused to give up and won the third set decisively with a score of 25-20. Needing another win to force fifth set, the Spartans continued their strong defensive play, making the Golden Tornadoes fight for each point. CWRU led by as many as five points, but couldn’t close out the match before Geneva rallied for a 23-25 victory.

Despite the result, the Spartans showed a lot of skill with outstanding play by both the starting and reserve teams throughout the entire match. Key contributors included junior Natalie Southard, sophomores Carolyn Bogart and Haley Kauffman along with freshman Isabelle Wagner.

Match #4

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team finished strong in their fourth and final match in the 15th Annual Marcia French Tournament. The Spartans swept the Capital University Crusaders to win the match three sets to none. Both teams played evenly for the opening of the first set until the Spartans won over some much-needed momentum and surged ahead by as many as seven points to win the first set 25-22. The ladies dominated the second set with some critical saves at the net and phenomenal serving by Junior Jordan Genovese to close out the set 25-12.

Looking to show dominance on the home court, CWRU opened the third set with a lead and didn’t give it up for the rest of the match. Genovese and Sophomore Katie Best served to finish up the set and the match with a score of 25-19.

The Spartans dominated their competition this match with outstanding play by both the veterans of the team and the new freshmen. The win was clearly a team effort with special recognition to a great service game and aggressive play by outside hitters Carolyn Bogart and Isabelle Wagner.
