Spartans sizzle despite winter chills

7. 33rd in the nation
The Spartans placed five members of the men’s swimming and diving teams to the 2016 NCAA Championships. Joining Farrell, the Spartans were able to send fourth-year student Aaron Tam, third-year student Andrew Henning and second-year students Drew Hamilton and Oliver Hudgins. Tam broke his own program record with a time of 46.05 in the first leg of the Spartans 400-yard freestyle relay, the four completed the event in 18th. Hamilton placed 18th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:02.85 while Hudgins finished 27th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke at the meet. Together the Spartans earned 21 points to finish in 33rd place in the nation.
8. Men’s basketball sweeps Carnegie Mellon
The men’s basketball team, despite a rough UAA season, won key games when they counted. The Spartans opened and closed their UAA play against arch rival Carnegie Mellon. The Spartans easily beat the Tartans at home in early January by a score of 94-81. While the success did not carry over into the following UAA games, the Spartans did a finish the season with two wins, one at home against Emory by a score of 88-78 and then finally coming from behind to beat Carnegie Mellon on the road by a satisfying final score of 93-87.
9. NYU nail-biter
The Spartan women ended Throwback Weekend in Adelbert Gym on a high note with a win that came down to the buzzer. The Spartans had entered the game on a three-game losing streak and the win was a bright spot on the season. McCoy hit a pair of free throws with 8.6 seconds remaining on the clock to break the tied game and secure the victory as the Spartans held on for the upset over number seven in the nation New York University.
