While most of campus relaxed during the long-awaited Fall Break, the Case Western Reserve University football team hit the road and faced off against Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on Oct. 20. The Spartans came out on top, beating the Golden Tornadoes 27-14.

The Spartans opened the first quarter with a touchdown pass from first-year quarterback Drew Saxton to second-year wide receiver Colt Morgan. CWRU held their 7-0 lead into the second quarter, again scoring from the Saxton-Morgan duo on a 37-yard pass. The Spartan defense held strong and maintained their 14-0 advantage until halftime.

With seconds to spare in the third quarter, first-year running back Donald Day III scored another touchdown for the Spartans, raising the score to 21-0.

The Golden Tornadoes attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, with two rushing touchdowns from fourth-year running back Trewon Marshall.

The Spartans scored again with a touchdown pass from Saxton to fourth-year wide receiver Luke DiFrancesco to expand the team’s lead.

CWRU came away with a 27-14 win over Geneva College, putting their overall season record at 6-1 and their Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) record at 5-1.

Over the course of the game, Saxton threw for 232 yards, putting his total passing yards this season at a whopping 2,177. This surpasses the previous CWRU record for most passing yards in a season for a first-year player, which was set at 1,988 by Nick Leskiewicz in 1994.

CWRU maintained its place at No. 22 in the D3Football.com Top 25 ranking. Just one spot ahead of the Spartans is PAC-rival Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) , who leads the conference with a 6-1 record.

The Spartans have three games left in the regular season to push past or tie W&J and claim their second consecutive PAC championship.

During Homecoming, the Spartans beat St. Vincent College, 37-7. The CWRU football team will face off next against the Bethany College Bison in Bethany, West Virginia, on Oct. 27. Bethany College has a 4-5 record so far this season. The Spartans final two games will be on campus at DiSanto Field.
