Baseball and softball athletes honored by UAA
Track and field compete in two events over weekend
The Case Western Reserve University track and field teams compete in two events over the weekend. The track athletes participated at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. The throwers participated in the Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
At the Marv Frye, the men’s team tallied 17 top-three finishes while the women had eight top-three finishes. Fourth-year runner Grant Mlack led the men’s team, winning the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Mlack was also honored with Spartan Club Athlete of the Week. Mlack teamed up with fourth-year runner Andrew Ibibo and second-year runners Jonathan Haling and Michael Hradesky to win the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:30.56.
The men’s 4×100-meter relay team of fourth-year runners Ben Zelkin and Zak Hurd, second-year runner Darius Inzar and first-year runner Joe Dinko also won first in their event. Fourth-year runners Rachel Willard, Danielle Kulpins and Marie-Louise Kloster paced the women’s track team. Willard won the triple jump of 10.73 meters, while Kulpins won the 5,000-meter run. Kloster also received first in the 400-meter hurdles.
At the Bob Kahn, the men’s throwers placed sixth with 40 points, while the women placed seventh with 25 points. First-year thrower Skyler Wadas and third-year thrower Tyler Bushman led the men, as Wadas finished third in javelin throw and Bushman placed fifth in discus throw. The women were paced by fourth-year thrower Nimi Gupta and third-year thrower Shannon Carroll, with Gupta finishing third in hammer throw and Carroll finishing third in javelin throw.
The team will compete in the 2018 Outdoor All-Ohio Championships on Saturday, April 14. Â
Baseball and softball receive All-UAA awards
The Case Western Reserve University baseball and softball teams were recognized with University Athletic Association (UAA) honors. Fourth-year designated hitter Alex Capetillo and fourth-year pitcher Ben Murphy received UAA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for baseball, while second-year pitcher Ilissa Hamilton received UAA Pitcher of the Week for softball. Hamilton also received Spartan Club Athlete of the Week.
