A crosstown rivalry always adds an extra element of excitement to a game. When you are able to come away with a victory, that makes the game even better.

The Case Western Reserve University Men’s Soccer team won their third straight game and advanced to a 5-1 record on the season with their win over crosstown rival John Carroll University.

Senior captain Chris Cvecko found the back of the net twice on Wednesday night to boost the Spartans to the win. Cvecko wasted no time in getting the ball rolling for the Spartans as he drilled a pass from senior teammate Devin Belew into the back of the net from about 12 yards out at the 1:09 mark. It was Belew’s first assist of his career.

The John Carroll squad tried to fight back but was held at bay by the Spartan defense. The first half of play saw a lot of back and forth play as the Spartans were limited to only one more shot in the half and the Blue Streaks only managed to pull off two, one of which was save by sophomore goalkeeper Christian Grimme, the other off target.

Gimme started the first game of his career Monday night and worked a shutout through 90 minutes of work, posting four saves.

Cvecko put the game firmly out of reach, early in the second half as he found the back of the net a second time off a pass from junior Jacob Grindel at the 47:10 mark, the third minute of play in the second half.

Despite being amongst the Spartan’s program leading scorers, (8th all time in goals scored and 7th in points) this was only Cvecko’s second career two goal showing.

The Spartans return to the field on Saturday, September 19th as they play host to Ohio Northern University at 2:30 in the afternoon.
