Nordic combined is a skiing-heavy sport in which competitors ski jump and cross-country ski, usually in that order. The Nordic combined consists of three events in the Olympics: individual large hill, individual normal hill and a team competition. The Nordic combined events in Sochi will feature 55 competing athletes hailing from 15 different countries, including four athletes from the United States. Germany, France and maybe the United States will look to make their mark on these events in Sochi.

           As the event draws near, there is a consensus favorite to take home all three gold medals related to the sport: Eric Frenzel of Germany, the current worldwide leader in both normal hill and large hill events, as well as the world champion in large hill.  At the last winter games in Vancouver, the U.S. Nordic combined team took home four medals. Leading the way is Billy Demong, who earned the gold medal in the large hill event at those Vancouver games in 2010. Joining him is the seasoned veteran Todd Lodwick, who will still be making history by becoming the first skier to participate in six Olympic games.
