“Grey’s Anatomy” wedding finale brings all the emotions

After powering through 12 seasons, “Grey’s Anatomy” never fails to leave the audience with more questions than answers after each finale. Twist after twist, the season 12 finale was no different.

The episode started off going directly into the drama. It’s the day of Amelia’s (Caterina Scorsone) wedding and all of her family members refuse to come, leaving her all alone and quite emotional. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) at first doesn’t help the situation by talking to Owen (Kevin McKidd) about what Cristina (Sandra Oh) would think, but in a change of events, Meredith becomes Amelia’s helper. After everything Meredith has gone through, it was interesting to see the dynamic she had with Amelia throughout the episode. From escaping the wedding and getting slurpees to ensuring that Amelia wanted to walk down the aisle, the pair truly begins to act like sisters. For the longest time Meredith hated Amelia, but by the end of the episode she becomes one of the few people Amelia can rely on. This helps Meredith realize that maybe there is a chance for her to become happy again and to find love—possibly with none other than Nathan (Martin Henderson). I’m glad Meredith is changing. For the longest time she was extremely bitter, something uncharacteristic of her. I’m hoping in the upcoming season we’ll get to see her become more like her old self.

It wouldn’t be a “Grey’s Anatomy” episode if there wasn’t drama happening on the side. Ben (Jason George) performs a C-section on April (Sarah Drew) in Meredith’s house with the aid of Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Miranda (Chandra Wilson) on the phone with Jackson (Jesse Williams) listening in. While the baby is okay and April is stable at the hospital, who knows what can still happen between the finale and the season premiere. Interestingly enough, this situation ends up bringing Ben and Miranda back together, ending the unnecessary tension between the two, something I’m sure everyone is grateful for.

Not nearly as big, but still important, are the relationships of Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington) as well as Arizona and Callie (Sara Ramirez). Alex finally ends things with Jo after she refuses to marry him, an act I was proud of. Alex has been through so much and deserves someone who will be honest and love him, though the situation is more than it appears. In a striking turn of events, Jo, whose real name is not even Jo, is actually already married and in hiding. Despite this, she should have been honest with Alex early on. If she truly loved him, she would trust him to handle the situation. On the Arizona and Callie front, Arizona has seen the light and has finally decided to split custody with Callie, something Callie desperately needed in her life. Unfortunately, Ramirez is leaving the show, so this is the last of Callie we will see. Callie is one of my favorite characters and I’m sad to see her go, but at least things ended on a high note and we can believe that her character is happy.

Polishing off the 12th season, this episode proves that character relationships and dynamics can still change on “Grey’s Anatomy.” I have no clue what season 13 will hold for the show, but if Maggie’s confession of liking Nathan and Meredith’s following side eye is any indication, there is guaranteed to be more emotional drama and changing interactions between the characters.
