ITS initiative offers information, prizes through social media outlets

Over the course of an eight-week period this spring, Case Western Reserve University Information Technology Services (ITS) will be highlighting the use of its social media vehicles as information vehicles.

Each week, ITS will offer tips and resources on a different facet of CWRU information technology via its presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. People who actively engage with ITS by asking questions and sharing information will have a chance to win gift cards to local businesses, such as Barnes and Noble and Starbucks.

ITS associates took into account the top reasons for calls to the Service Desk when deciding what topics to feature. “We ultimately want to increase awareness to the tools and resources that people have available to help them with their technology needs,” explained Kristen Kolenz, training analyst for ITS.

The Service Desk is the technical support hotline offered to all members of the university community by both phone and email.

ITS’s social media outreach has devoted one week to computer repair and this past week to information on the CWRU network.  Beginning April 2, ITS will begin sharing tips and resources regarding passwords and account management. The department notes that the looming threat of phishing scams and the requirement that single sign-on passwords be changed annually make this a critical issue of which the CWRU community should be aware.

During this week, ITS will be offering gift card giveaways on each of its social media platforms.  ITS’s tags for social media are CWRU Information Technology Services on Facebook and Google+ and @CWRUITS on Twitter. Watch The Observer for the latest information on the next topic to be tackled and why it is a relevant issue for the university community.
