“Don’t Call Me on the Phone” — Beach Day

“Don’t Call Me on the Phone” combines the shimmering sound of the sunniest summer day with the attitude of a thunderstorm. Beach Day play a unique tough-meets-tender brand of pop that throws in a helping of garage rock for good measure. Be on the lookout for their sophomore album, “Native Echoes,” coming out on Kanine Records the week of August 19.

“Hotel” — The Antlers

The Antlers’ new album defies simple categorization. Each song that appears on “Familiars” is a pocket symphony that will appeal to fans of indie pop, chamber music and electronica alike. “Hotel” is undoubtedly the strongest track, with a lush yet subtle mixture of airy keyboards and velvety horns. “Familiars” is the group’s fourth album, released on Anti Records on June 17.

“Writing’s on the Wall” — OK Go

Say whatever you like about OK Go, but their music videos are never boring. The trippy, mirrored wizardry behind the “Writing’s on the Wall” video blows the iconic, treadmill-filled video for “Here It Goes Again” out of the water. It also doesn’t hurt that this tune is the strongest OK Go has written in close to five years. Sporting a new-wave sheen that is simply irresistible, this is the sign of strong things to come from these power-poppers.

“Rent I Pay” — Spoon

Spoon is back after a nearly four-year hiatus with the swaggering “Rent I Pay” off their forthcoming album “They Want My Soul.” Starting out with just a simple drumbeat, this track builds as guitar, bass and vocals all layer into a groovy piece of pop. Few bands evoke the word ‘strut’ quite like Spoon do, and it’s nice to have Britt Daniel’s arrogant snarl to remind us that indie rock isn’t all mild-mannered and soft-spoken.

“Welcome To The Church Of Rock And Roll” — Foxy Shazam

Attacking with an unrelenting, Queen-like fury, “Welcome To The Church Of Rock And Roll” is a quintessential Foxy Shazam tune. The sextet’s latest release, “Gonzo,” is a surprising break from the polished theatricality heard on this track; it is a spontaneous and independently released album, recorded entirely live and in one take. Although unfortunately not available on Spotify, the album can be streamed on their website. Foxy Shazam will be at the Grog Shop to promote “Gonzo” on June 27. Tickets are $16.

“I Got A Line On You” — Spirit

While never reaching the same heights as some of their contemporaries, Spirit represent everything good about psychedelic rock in the late 60s and early 70s. “I Got A Line On You” was the group’s most commercially successful single, reaching #25 on the Billboard charts in 1968. Infectious and inspired, this song is full of harmonies that bop along to a pounding piano line and electrifying guitar from Randy California, the group’s frontman. “I Got A Line On You” is the musical equivalent of a potato chip; it’s impossible to only listen once.
