The Case Western Reserve University women’s soccer team won a big game last weekend against the College of Wooster, with a final score of 1-0. The win stopped a streak where the Spartans went 1-1-2. The Spartans resume play in the University Athletic Association (UAA) tonight against the University of Chicago. With the win, the Spartans improved to 6-5-4 on the season.

The first half was relatively intense for both teams, despite no goals being scored. Both teams put up six shots with a combined seven saves from both teams’ respective goalies. Neither team held the advantage in corner kicks, with Wooster and CWRU registering one each.

In the second half of the contest, the Spartans took over offensively despite the relative lack of scoring. CWRU outshot Wooster by an incredible 15-3 margin, with seven of those shots on goal. Furthermore, the Spartans generated four corner kick opportunities, compared to none for the opposition.

The Spartans scored the first and only goal of the game 83 minutes into the match thanks to fourth-year forward Jennifer Zajic. The loss dropped Wooster’s record on the season to 5-8-4. Spartan third-year goalie Sarah Newcomb made four saves in the contest. When asked about her team’s hard fought and much needed victory, Spartan Head Coach Tiffany Crooks said, “The bye weekend of the UAA paired with fall break has traditionally been a very challenging game for us…. We were all very happy to get the win and especially happy that Jennie got the game winner.“

With the win this week, the Spartans improved their record on the road to 2-4-3 on the season. The Spartans have a 4-1-1 record at home. CWRU was able to stay out of foul trouble in the game, only registering three fouls in the entire 90 minutes. Wooster had eight total fouls. The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Spartans.

The Spartans, who are 0-2-2 in conference matches, play two tough UAA opponents at home this week. After they play the University of Chicago tonight, Washington University of St. Louis will visit them on Sunday, Oct. 30. The game against Chicago is also senior day. Crooks said, “I think the seniors are nostalgic and taking the time to reflect on their experiences as CWRU women’s soccer student-athletes…. The commitment to growth and hard work both collectively and individually has cemented my love for them.”
