Track and field performs well at All-Ohio Outdoor Championships

The Case Western Reserve University track and field teams had great performances at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships in Delaware, Ohio on April 14. Leading the women was fourth-year runner Danielle Kulpins, who set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:40.17. The time also set an event record that had stood since 2003. She won first place and earned All-Ohio honors.
Joining Kulpins in All-Ohio honors were fourth-year jumper Rachel Willard, who earned second in the triple jump, and third-year thrower Shannon Carroll, who finished second in the javelin throw.
The women’s team totaled 47 points, earning them an eighth-place finish out of 19 teams at the event.
On the men’s side, fourth-year sprinter Andrew Ibibo won All-Ohio honors in two events. He finished second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. Fourth-year runner Aidan DeSanto finished second in the 1,500-meter run, while fourth-year runner Andrew Green was top two in the 5,000-meter run. In the 10,000-meter run, third-year runner Robert Iriye placed third. Second-year athletes Dominic Oddo and Jonathan Haling finished third in their respective events. The men’s 4×100 and 4×400 teams also finished in the top three.
The men’s team finished in third out of the 19 teams. They totaled 90 points.
Wrestling gives out team awards
Head Coach Danny Song of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team gave out seven awards at the third-annual team awards banquet to celebrate the performance of a number of individuals. Here are the various awards and their winners:
Most Pins Award: second-year wrestler Alec Hoover (10)
Dr. Si Ostrach, Scholar Athlete Award: Alec Hoover, first-year Thomas Gallagher, first-year Brian Kent (4.0, fall semester)
Dr. Tom McLaughlin Tortoise and the Hare Award: Alec Hoover
John T. Vaughan, CIT ’37 Most Dedicated Award: second-year Isaac Collier
The Captains Award (selected by and presented by team captains, fourth-years Nick Tommas and Nate Tommas): fourth-year Cito Balsells
The Bill Kerslake, CIT ’51 Most Improved Award: third-year Gavin Dersh-Fisher
The Bob Del Rosa Most Valuable Wrestler Award: second-year Andrew Hoover.
UAA Awards and Spartan Club Athletes of the Week
Second-year pitcher Scott Kutschke earned University Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week honors after two victories against New York University for the baseball team. Kutschke did not allow a run in any of his eight innings of relief. First-year softball pitcher Sidney Brannam also won UAA Pitcher of the Week. Brannam went 2-0 in her two starts and allowed a total of one run over the two games.
Fourth-year tennis player Nithya Kanagasegar was one of the athletes named to the UAA 30th Anniversary Women’s Tennis Team. Members of the team include those who have been named Most Valuable Player or accumulated five or more points, with two points awarded for All-Association first team singles recognition and one point for second-team singles honors in her career. Kanagasegar was named the UAA Most Valuable Player in 2016, being the first in school history to win this award. She ranks No. 6 in the Central Region for singles play and No. 4 in doubles play.
Case Western Reserve University had 83 athletes recognized with UAA Spring All-Academic Recognition. Athletes must have a minimum of a 3.3 GPA and complete one full year of college. Over 500 athletes were honored in the UAA this year.
Fourth-year distance runner Danielle Kulpins and second-year runner Michael Hradesky were recognized this week with the Spartan Club Athlete of the Week award. Hradesky led the men’s track and field team to a third place finish in the 2018 All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. He received All-Ohio honors in the 800-meter run with a first-place finish. He was also a member of the second-place 4×400-meter relay team. Kulpins led the Spartan women’s track and field team to an eighth place finish in the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. She earned All-Ohio honors by finishing first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:40.17 is currently first in the UAA and first in Division III.
