Women fall to 1-1 after heartbreaking loss
The Spartan women’s basketball team lost their second University Athletics Association game versus the University of Rochester. The team made a strong showing, switching leads with the Yellowjackets before falling behind with a score of 53-55 to end the game.
The Spartans started strong, leading Rochester for the entire first half. Starters Brooke Orcutt, Amanda Germer and Julie Mooney all putting up solid numbers to help limit the Yellowjackets to an 18.8% field goal percentage. The ladies entered the half up 31-20.
But the Yellowjackets came on strong in the second half, tying the game at 40-40 with just over six minutes remaining. Rochester scored seven straight points soon after that and with just seconds left in the game, made a critical layup to break the tie and end up on top.
The team ended with three players reaching double-figure scoring numbers. Orcutt, Mooney and Jessica McCoy led in scoring for the team with Berit Eppard leading defensively with 11 rebounds on the night.
