The Case Western Reserve University women’s soccer team fell victim to a pair of shutouts this past weekend, courtesy of the University of Chicago and No. 5 Washington University.

On Friday, Oct. 26 the Spartans lost by a score of 6-0 to University Athletic Association foe University of Chicago on a cold and rainy Friday evening at Case Field. Prior to the match, Case honored its seven women’s soccer senior student-athletes.

Chicago (12-5-0, 4-2-0) struck twice early on as Sara Kwan notched goals at 9:40 and 12:22 of the first half. The first came unassisted, while the second was aided by a pass from Beatrice Hobson.

The Spartans threatened to cut into the lead in the 18th minute with a look at an open net, but a finesse shot by sophomore forward Christine Straka hit the Chicago crossbar.

The Maroons added to their lead late in the first half when Naomi Pacalin headed in a goal following a cross from Anna Goddi in the 42nd minute.

The second half produced three more Chicago goals with Hobson scoring the first at 62:20, Goddi the second at 63:37, and Claire Mackevicius the third at 69:52.

For the match, the Maroons outshot the Spartans, 13-12, while Case won the corner kick battle, 4-3.

In goal for Case, freshman Megan Romelfanger played the first 81:25 and recorded one save. Junior Kerry Martenis came on in relief and picked up one stop.

Chicago’s Jacinda Reid totaled six saves in 76 minutes of action.

The Spartans rounded out their home schedule with a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Washington. Case falls to 7-6-4 overall and 1-4-1. With the victory, the Bears improve to 15-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the UAA. The Bears need just a single point to clinch the UAA Championship in their final game.

Washington started its attack early in the match with shots by Jessica Johnson in the fifth minute and Emily Gosche in the 10th minute, but both scoring attempts were saved by Romelfanger.

Keeping the offensive pressure on, the Bears struck with a pair of quick scores just 39 seconds apart, as Anna Zambricki scored at the 29:40 and 30:29 marks with a pair of unassisted goals.

Not satisfied yet, Zambricki tacked on her third goal in the 85th minute to complete her hat trick. She was assisted on the score with a corner kick by Kate Doyle.

For the match, the Bears outshot the Spartans, 20-8, and won the corner kick battle, 11-6.

Romelfanger tied a career-high with nine stops for Case, while Washington’s Clara Jaques was credited with a quartet of saves in the victory.

The Spartans will head to the University of Rochester for the final match of the season. The Yellow Jackets are currently at the bottom of the UAA table with a 3-12-1 overall record and a winless 0-6-0 conference record. The match kicks off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
