This past weekend involved a lengthy road trip for the Case Western Reserve University women’s soccer team. Their travels brought them into two conference showdowns in the University Athletic Association.

The first game took place in Chicago, against the University of Chicago Maroons. The game was a bit rough from the outset. The Maroons scored 2:51 into the game, and would add another goal about three quarters of the way through the first half as well. The 2-0 scoreline that the game would end the first half with would be the scoreline that the full game would also end with. The Phoenixes outshot the Spartans 12-5, and there is nothing in it that indicates that the result should have been different. UChicago, ranked 18 in the country, backed up their ranking.

The Spartans would hit the road again to head to St. Louis, Missouri. There they would face off against the Washington University Bears. It would be a hard fought contest throughout. Megan Romelfanger, CWRU’s senior goalkeeper, would parry shot after shot all game long. When all was said and done, the Bears had put 27 shots on the board. Romelfanger stopped every one until the very end. At the end of regulation, the Bears had an opportunity to win the game on a penalty kick. Romelfanger dove to her right and was able to save the kick and, temporarily, the day for the Spartans.

The game would make it through the first half of the sudden death extra time period with no scoring. It was with just under three minutes left in the second extra time that Katie Chandler let fly from 30 yards out into the back of the net for UChicago. Romelfanger played a fantastic game, but was unable to do anything to stop the wonder strike for the golden goal for Chandler and the Bears.

Following these two losses in conference, CWRU women’s soccer record dropped to 7-6-4, and 0-5-1 in conference. Their regular season will conclude Saturday, Nov. 7 as they return to Cleveland to host Carnegie Mellon University, the number three ranked team in the country as of last week.

Bitter rivals, these schools will always put up a good fight. It is also Senior Day, and CWRU students should come out and support the six seniors: Romelfanger, Makenzie Best, Rachel Hammond, Rachel Junn, Lauren Wichman and Meredith Shea. The game starts at 5 p.m. and the seniors would surely appreciate support against a big conference rival.
